Savannah on a Budget

by Brandon Robinson

Savannah, Georgia, is known for its Southern charm, immersive history, and scenic beauty. Yet, though it may sound like a trip to the hostess city would cost a fortune, visiting this destination doesn’t have to be expensive.

Savannah offers several ways to enjoy the sights and scenes without breaking the bank. With free attractions and our vacation deals on Savannah vacation rentals, the hostess city is perfect for those looking to stick to a budget. Here's how to make the most of your Savannah stay without overspending!

Parks and Squares

The Savannah Squares are one of the top free attractions to do in Savannah. The city has 22 historic squares, each with its own unique charm.

The squares are perfect for taking in the beauty of Savannah while resting or having a picnic. Some of the most famous squares, like Chippewa Square—the location of the Forrest Gump bench scene—are popular spots as well.

Each square is filled with lush greenery and monuments, offering a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle.

Forsyth Farmer’s Market

For a taste of local Savannah, visit the Forsyth Farmers' Market located near the southern end of Forsyth Park.

Open year-round on Saturdays, the market is an excellent place to sample local produce, handmade goods, and artisanal foods.

If you’re not planning to shop, simply stroll through the market as a free way to enjoy your morning. You can enjoy the atmosphere and interact with local producers to learn more about their products and services.

Dog Parks

Savannah is a pet-friendly city, and if you're traveling with a dog, there are several dog parks where your furry friend can stretch their legs.

Forsyth Park has a designated off-leash dog park where pets can run and play. But for a more secluded experience, head to the Daffin Dog Park which offers a fenced area for dogs to socialize and play.

These parks are completely free and provide a great way to let your dog enjoy the outdoors while taking in the beauty of Savannah.

Savannah Botanical Gardens

The Savannah Botanical Gardens is a free attraction that features walking trails, a pond, and diverse plant collections. It also includes the historic Reinhard House, a preserved 19th-century cottage.

Just minutes from downtown, it's a quiet spot for a budget-friendly outdoor experience. The gardens are open daily during daylight hours year-round. While general admission is free, groups of 10 or more may require a small fee.

City Market

A trip to the hostess city wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Savannah City Market, located in the heart of the Historic District.

This area is filled with art galleries, shops, and local vendors offering a variety of handmade goods. While you might be tempted to buy souvenirs, simply browsing the market is free and allows you to experience the local culture.

The historic buildings in the area add to the charm and make it a great place to enjoy a relaxed afternoon. If you’re lucky, you might even stumble upon free live music or street performances.

Historic Churches

Savannah is home to a number of beautiful historic churches, many of which are open to the public at little to no cost.

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is one of the most striking churches in the city. With its stunning Gothic architecture and stained-glass windows, visitors are welcome to explore its interior which offers a peaceful space to reflect.

Another historic church is Christ Church Anglican, which is known for its serene atmosphere and rich history. These churches are the perfect stops for reflection and a break from your sightseeing.

Walk on Tybee Island

Just a short drive from Savannah, Tybee   offers a beautiful beach escape as an affordable getaway. While there may be a small parking fee, the beaches themselves are free to access.

The soft sand and beaches make it the perfect spot for a relaxing day by the ocean. You can walk along the shore, enjoy a picnic, or take in the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. If you’re looking for vacation savings, Tybee Island is a wonderful place for budget-friendly travel.

River Street

No Savannah visit would be complete without a trip to River Street—one of the most famous streets in the city.

This cobblestone street is lined with historic buildings that house shops, restaurants, and galleries. While shopping and dining along River Street can get pricey, walking the streets and enjoying the views is absolutely free.

The street is also home to public art installations and historic landmarks, making it an excellent place to explore without any cost. River Street and Plant Riverside District also regularly host free events like music festivals or outdoor markets, making it perfect for budget-friendly travelers.
