From celebrations to fireworks, Independence Day is celebrated with deep-rooted tradition in this Southern city. Whether it’s your first time or fifth time visiting Savannah, knowing how to navigate the events, transportation, and crowds makes all the difference. Here’s your insider’s guide to making the most of 4th of July in Savannah!

Fireworks: River Street and Tybee Island

Fireworks are the heart of any July 4th celebration, and Savannah delivers two standout shows.

Savannah’s Waterfront Independence Day Celebration

Crowds gather early along the Savannah River to enjoy live music, food vendors, and the festive energy that pulses through the Savannah Historic District. At night, a dazzling display lights up the waterfront, with fireworks launching over the river and reflecting across the city’s historic facades. Viewing spots fill up quickly, especially along the promenade and Rousakis Plaza, so arriving early is strongly recommended. The fireworks show begins approximately at 9:30p.

Tybee Island 2025 July 4th Fireworks

Location: Tybee Pier and Pavilion (16th St. Tybee Island, GA 31328)

Date/Time: 9:15p-10p

If you’re looking for a coastal vibe, Tybee Island offers a spectacular beachfront fireworks show. Held on the beach near the Tybee Pier and Pavilion, this show blends the sound of crashing waves with the boom of fireworks. Families and couples line the sand with chairs and coolers enjoying the laid-back atmosphere. Just remember that parking is limited on the island, and traffic can back up significantly in both directions—plan ahead. The fireworks show begins approximately from 9:15p-9:30p.

Public Celebrations and Festivities

The Savannah’s Waterfront Independence Day Celebration is a highlight, featuring live music, food trucks, patriotic vendors, and kid-friendly activities all along River Street from 7:30p-10p on July 4th.

This family-friendly event runs until the fireworks show, offering a perfect way to spend your July 4th while staying in the heart of the action.

Forsyth Park on July 4th

Location: Savannah Historic District (Forsyth Park, Savannah, GA 31401)

Nearby in Forsyth Park, informal gatherings and smaller-scale festivities offer a more laid-back vibe. Visitors bring picnic blankets and enjoy shaded spots under the oaks, and it's not unusual to find acoustic musicians, food carts, and flag-themed lawn games taking place. It’s a quieter counterpoint to the River Street crowd and a favorite among locals.

Forsyth Park is located within the Savannah Historic District, making it easy to swing by before heading toward the waterfront for the evening fireworks.

Getting Around: Parking, Shuttles, and Ferries

Navigating Savannah on the 4th of July requires some planning. With thousands of visitors descending on the Savannah Historic District, parking becomes a premium commodity by mid-morning. Public parking garages are available, but they fill up quickly. On-street parking is another option, but it's limited and subject to closures during large events.

One smart alternative is to take advantage of public transportation and shuttles, many of which are offered by Chatham Area Transit (CAT). Routes typically extend hours and stops around the major event zones, especially near River Street and Forsyth Park. Visitors staying outside downtown may want to use park-and-ride options when available.

Old Town Trolley of Savannah will also be operating on a regular schedule on July 4th, offering a fun and convenient way to see the city’s top attractions and festive decorations. Their hop-on, hop-off service allows riders to explore Independence Day events throughout the city without the hassle of parking, making it an efficient way to enjoy the celebrations.

Visitors can also take advantage of the Savannah Belles Ferry, which runs between Hutchinson Island and River Street. It’s not only a functional way to move around—especially if you’re staying at a resort on the river—it’s also a scenic ride with great photo opportunities.

For those headed to Tybee Island, consider using the Tybee Island Shuttle or arriving early and staying late to avoid post-firework traffic jams. Rideshares like Uber and Lyft are also active, though surge pricing is common during peak hours.
