Gameday the right way Georgia Southern Football

by Brandon Robinson

There’s something electric in the air when it’s gameday in Statesboro, Georgia. Here, football isn’t just a sport—it’s a full-day event. Experiencing a Georgia Southern gameday the right way means knowing where to park, what to pack, and how to tailgate like a pro. From first-timers to lifelong eagles, this gameday guide walks you through how to make the most of your trip to Eagle Nation.

Where to Stay Near Paulson Stadium

Have you booked your gameday stays??

Opulence Vacation Rentals provides guests with homes and villas that put you and your friends and family right near the action. Our properties have ideal accommodations for families, alumni, and visiting fans alike.

Instead of dealing with crowded hotels and limited parking, consider one of these stays for a more private gameday experience. These rentals give you the perfect base for enjoying all things Georgia Southern.

Where to Eat Before and After the Game

Food is a big part of the Georgia Southern football experience, and Statesboro offers plenty of great options. For a hearty brunch or early lunch before the game, check out The Daily Grind or Sugar Magnolia Coffeehouse. If you want something quick and local before kickoff, try Dolan’s BBQ or Gnats Landing, a laid-back spot known for traditional American eats and cold drinks.

After the game, expect restaurants near the stadium to be busy (but worth the wait). El Sombrero is a go-to for Tex-Mex fans. For flavorful Latin cuisine, head to Del Sur, or if you’re in the mood for a college-town classic, Dingus Magees delivers burgers and beer.

Other local favorites include The Saucy Shrimp for seafood lovers, Nonna Picci or Holiday’s Pizza   for great pizza, and global flavors at Tandoor and Tap. Still exploring? Try Azul Tex-Mex, Huey’s on Main, or any number of local gems around town.

Parking and Arrival Tips

Getting to Allen E. Paulson Stadium early is key. If you’re not a student or season ticket holder, plan to arrive several hours before kickoff. Free public parking is available off-campus at locations like the Russell Union, with shuttle services running to the stadium. Paid parking near the stadium is limited and goes quickly, so reserving a spot is highly recommended. Also, traffic builds fast around Fair Road and Lanier Drive (especially an hour before the game). Plan to give yourself extra time, and follow event signage to navigate with less stress.

Georgia Southern Tailgating 101

Tailgating is a major part of the Georgia Southern football experience, and the action begins hours before kickoff. You’ll find groups grilling, playing cornhole, and flying Eagle flags proudly across campus. The most popular Georgia Southern tailgating areas include the Recreational Activities Center (RAC), Performing Arts Center (PAC), and Lot 29.

Family-friendly tailgating is best near the Paulson Stadium grass lots, where the noise levels are lower and the crowd is more laid back. Student-friendly zones are a bit more rowdy, perfect for those looking for music, energy, and school spirit in full force.

Don’t forget your cooler, portable grill, chairs, and shade tent. Many fans wear Georgia Southern blue and white, so dress the part to blend in with Eagle Nation.

Stadium Info and Seating Tips

Paulson Stadium, known as “The Prettiest Little Stadium in America,” holds over 25,000 fans and offers both general admission and reserved seating. Gates usually open 90 minutes before kickoff. Concessions are spread throughout the concourse with typical stadium fare—hot dogs, nachos, soft drinks—but you’ll also find some local vendors offering BBQ or boiled peanuts.

Families may want to choose the quieter side stands, while students and alumni tend to gather near the student section. Restrooms and first-aid stations are clearly marked, and the stadium is wheelchair accessible.

Traditions to Know Before You Go

Georgia Southern football comes with its own unique culture. If it’s your first visit, here are a few traditions to know so you can cheer like a local.

Freedom’s Flight

For many years before kickoff, an American bald eagle named Freedom flew across the stadium—a fan favorite moment. While Freedom passed away on March 29, 2025, the tradition remains a cherished part of Georgia Southern history and may continue in new ways in the future.

GSU Fight Song

When the band starts playing, join in with the chant, especially the ending: “Georgia Southern—Eagles! Fight, fight, fight!”

Eagle Walk

About two hours before game time, players march into the stadium with fans lining the path and cheering them on. Don’t miss it—it’s a key part of gameday spirit.

Must-Pack Items for Your Visit

Georgia weather can shift quickly during football season. Be ready for heat, sun, or a surprise rain shower. Here’s a list of must-pack items to help you enjoy your visit:

  • Folding chairs and a tent or canopy for tailgating
  • Coolers with water, snacks, or your favorite drinks
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for shade
  • Portable phone charger or power bank
  • Poncho or light rain jacket just in case
  • Clear stadium-approved bag (required for entry)
  • Georgia Southern football gear—shirts, hats, flags, and more

Comfortable shoes are also important—tailgating and walking the campus adds up fast.

Georgia Southern football is more than just watching a game—it’s about joining a community. From the first tailgate to the final whistle, it’s an experience built on energy, tradition, and Southern pride. Our gameday guide is sure to help you make the most of Georgia Southern’s upcoming football season. Hail Southern!
